Jessie’s Girl is an 80’s rock cover group, playing hits like, “Don’t Stop Believin‘”, “Billy Jean“, and even “Ghostbusters“.  When doing band promos for them, my goal was to have each member show a different personality in each shot…

Notes:

Trying to organize 8 people at once for any sort shots is never an easy task, especially for band promos.  When the group you’re shooting is an 80’s cover group with neat costumes and make up, you want them all to show their personalities in the shots.  For some of the band members in Jessie’s Girl, I had to give very little direction, as they did their own thing.  For others, I had to constantly keep an eye on them, making sure they weren’t just standing there with their hands at their sides.

My goal was to have each member with a different look/stance in each shot, since personality was really key for this shoot.  Sometimes it happened, sometimes it didn’t.  I did this shoot on my own, which was a bit silly of me.  If I had an assistant, I could have moved the lights around a bit faster, and had another eye to look out for poses that were off or odd.

Equipment:

Nikon D600 w/ 24-70 2.8 lens

Lighting: primarily Nikon SB-900 in a 21″ beauty dish camera left, and SB-700 bare far camera right.  Triggered using Paul Buff Cybersync transmitters.

In hindsight, it would likely have been better to use my Parabolic umbrella and have softer light.  In the future for outdoor shots like this, I’ll likely use the beauty dish as rim light, and parabolic as main/fill.

Comments or Feedback?

If you just want to say you like the shots, or want to ask me a quick question, feel free to leave a message in the comments at the bottom of the post.
