Live Music – Castle @ The Music Hall of Williamsburg

Doom metal, heavy metal, whatever you want to call it, Castle is pretty sweet, and rocks pretty hard.  Ironically, I’ve been seeing a lot of female-fronted metal bands lately, something that used to be few and far between.  With Elizabeth Blackwell bringing the bass groove and some haunting vocals, Castle was quite the treat as the opened for The Sword

Notes:

I’m not 100% sure, but I believe the drummer they had this night (and what looks like a few previous nights of the tour as well) is a fill in drummer for the band’s usual drummer, Al McCartney.  Guitarist Mat Davis had some troubles with his guitar amps as well, which lasted a little over 10 minutes.  In this time, the drummer played some sweet fills and drum solos to fill the dead air that at least kept the audience interested.

The lighting for this was surprisingly decent, with some really kick ass back lighting causes a cool rim light behind Mat.  In the first shot I posted of him here, it looks almost as if the smoke that pillowed behind him turned in to the shape of angel wings, which is pretty sweet.  Important to note: there was no photo pit/barrier for this show, so I pretty much as close to the stage as possible and had to shoot over people.  Luckily, I managed to get behind a girl who was about 5′ 1″ tall, and since I’m 5’10”, shooting over her head was no issue.  Yay for height *flex*.
