I’m usually not a huge fan of converting things to black and white, but sometimes, it just works.  Near the end of my first day of shooting Warped Tour 2014, I had to think of a way to challenge myself a bit.  My challenge for this year?  Take shots that would be almost MADE for being in b&w.  Starting with this shot of Garret Rapp – The Color Morale …

Notes on shooting Warped Tour 2014 portraits:

The one main thing about shooting Warped Tour is that it is easy.  There stages, photo pits, and sun light make getting shots (typically) very, very easy.  Especially when compared to an indoor venue with poor lighting that many of these bands are playing at.  As a concert photographer, you need to find a way to separate what you do from every standing next to and shooting exactly what you are.

At first, I was trying to mimic the idea that Adam Elmakias had of doing “on stage portraits.”  But his method used a 2x teleconveter on his 70-200, and required hard sunlight to bring out the person’s pores.  I don’t own a TC (I used to, but I barely used it, so I sold it) and hard sunlight was not always an option for me.  Besides, why copy what someone else is doing?

The method I went with was this:

1 – Three-quarter shot of single person, if vertical

2 – Capture a unique emotion (such as screaming or a passive moment) that lends itself to black and white

3 – Two eyes, a nose, and mouth in the shot (this ment getting the proper angle)

4 – Fill the frame as much as possible, without oddly cutting a body part off

That was the rough idea.  By definition, the shots of Gus Farias, Mike Champa, Spender Charnas, and Sydney Sierota are almost exactly what I was trying to get.  Composition wise, all are a little flawed, but if event/music photography wasn’t at least a little flawed, it would look staged, and be something everyone could get.

I hope to come up with another challenge for myself next year.  Challenging yourself in an easy setting is the best way to improve, and Warped Tour 2014 was prime for self photography challenges.
